Jenna Dewan: Thus Far
The former dancer and star of “Step It Up” talks about making the transition from dancing to acting, meeting with her real-life counterparts and the pitfalls of Hollywood. Catch Jenna Dewan in the new movie “Fab Five: The Texas Cheerleader Scandal,” premiering August 2 at 9 pm et/pt.
You started out your career as a dancer. Which do you prefer — dancing or acting?
Those are my two passions. At the moment, I’m drawn more to acting than dancing, but I just started doing it a few years ago. It’s just the start of the evolutionary process of acting for me, so I can’t get enough of it right now. But it’s not about liking one more than the other. They’re two different passions that satisfy two different parts of me.
Do you get to do any dancing or cheerleading in the film?
Not in this movie. We added a little part because the director said, “OK, we can’t have you in this movie and not do any sort of dancing.” We do a little bit where I teach the girls a dance. It’s about 10 seconds long.
Was it tough standing on the sidelines and watching the other girls dancing?
The parts where they actually perform at a pep rally, I was a little anxious. I get this feeling when I watch any sort of dance performance where I just want to get up and do it with them. But I danced for 20 years, so I was ready for a change.
What kind of a kid were you in high school? Were you a cheerleader?
Yeah, I was a cheerleader. I was a Texas cheerleader at that. But I wasn’t like these girls. The way they acted is so foreign to me. I was on a competitive team. We were a very athletic squad. We did social things, but we couldn’t get away with anything. If we missed a practice, we got demerits.
How do you think that girls like the ones in the movie get so out of control?
I think it has a lot to do with our society. The role models that a lot of kids are looking up to right now, in Hollywood and in life in general, are not great. They’re out of control themselves. There’s an epidemic of young kids making big mistakes even younger, and no one is stopping them. Now more than ever, I see parents trying to be best friends and not parents. They’re not providing boundaries and are letting their kids run amuck, and I think that needs to stop. That’s actually part of why I did this movie.
You’re not much older than the girls playing the cheerleaders in the film. When the cameras weren’t on, were you more of a friend to them or a mentor?
We all got along great. I think because I was playing a character that was pretty close in age and I was nervous about looking and feeling older, we didn’t hang out that much outside of work. But when we were on set, we had some really great conversations. I talked to them about their lives. A lot of them are just getting into acting, and they had a lot of questions. So it was more of a friendship than an older person talking to a younger kid.
Did you meet with Michaela Ward (the real-life coach)? What kind of advice did she give you during filming?
I sat her down in my trailer and questioned her. This is the first time I’ve played a real person, and I needed to make sure I was representing her fairly. We spent 10 minutes together and she said, “Oh, I’m so glad that you’re playing me.” And I said, “I’m so glad you’re as cool as you are and that we’re on the same page.”
Did she tell you anything about any of the other girls in the story?
She told us the story was not exaggerated. She sat down with the writer and gave her a blow-by-blow of what really happened. One thing she told me that we didn’t have time to touch on in the movie is that she actually formed a good friendship with Brooke (the role played by Ashley Benson). She was a friend and mentor to these girls for about a minute, and then it all changed. We didn’t get to touch on that in the movie. But she was in awe that we were making this movie and showing her in a positive light, because all the other media outlets weren’t.
What was it like to work with Tatum O’Neal?
Tatum is a sweetheart. It was an interesting experience working with somebody who has been in the business since she was 10. It’s a whole other level of knowing about the pitfalls of Hollywood. We got along great.
Did she give you any advice?
When we were leaving, she gave me a hug and said, “I think you have a really big road ahead of you in this career. Promise me that you’ll stay focused and keep doing what you’re doing.” I think it was her way of saying, “Don’t go down the other road. Just do the best you can.”
What’s your favorite cheerleading movie?
“Bring It On.” It’s funny. It was the first of its genre.
What are your favorite songs to dance to?
I am a big fan of jazz and hip-hop. My favorite song right now is the Justin Timberlake and Madonna song, “4 Minutes.” I also love old-school Paula Abdul. Growing up, she was my idol. Any time “Cold Hearted Snake” and “Opposites Attract” came on, I got excited.
If your life was a Lifetime movie, what would it be called?
“Thus Far.” At the end of my life, what I’d hope it would be is “To Love and Be Loved.”

NEWS FLASH: New Interview, Video, and Movie Update for Channing Tatum’s Girlfriend Jenna Dewan
July 3, 2008
It’s that time again Chenna fans. It’s been a while since we’ve had an update on Jenna Dewan’s current projects. Channing Tatum’s longtime girlfriend has been very busy shooting numerous movies that are scheduled to release this year, and I have quite a bit of news to share.
In addition to her new Lifetime Television movie “Fab Five: Texas Cheerleader Scandal“, which premieres Saturday, August 2, 2008 at 9pm ET/PT, fans should be on the look out for Jenna in her romantic comedy ‘The Jerk Theory‘ with ‘Step Up’s Josh Henderson and in the dark comedy ‘Six Wives of Henry Lefay‘ with Tim Allen.
Abraham, one of the producers over at ‘The Jerk Theory‘, just let me know that they have added another video of Jenna on their YouTube channel. In the new video, we get to learn a little more about Jenna’s character Molly.
You can CLICK HERE to watch it or you can check it out below:
Abraham also wants all of us Jenna fans to know that the film just launched the movie’s official site at TheJerkTheory.com, so make sure to check it out. You’ll find a ton of promotional photos, info about the film and the characters, and you can even hear snippets of Josh Henderson’s debut album, which is used as the soundtrack for the film.
There’s even more where that came from, because they’ll be releasing the movie poster in a few days and the trailer in the next week or so. Everyone just stay tuned to Channing Tatum Unwrapped, and I’ll post them both as soon as they’re released.
I want to give a big thanks to Abraham for the inside scoop on Jenna’s new film. Fans can CLICK HERE to check out tons of photos of Jenna and Chan on the film set last year.
Next up, we have a new interview that Jenna recently did to promote her film ‘Six Wives of Henry Lefay‘. It’s a short article, but is jammed pack with info on most of her 2008 projects, the dance battle with Miley Cyrus, Channing Tatum, and a new project that we’re hearing about for the first time. Enjoy!
A Whole New Tim Allen in ‘Six Wives,’ Says Rising Starlet Dewan
By Marilyn Beck and Stacy Jenel Smith
Jul 2, 2008
“Tim Allen completely impressed me playing a totally different character than I’ve seen him do before — a womanizing, gotta-love-him older man,” reports Jenna Dewan, who’ll be seen alongside Tim in the upcoming “The Six Wives of Henry Lefay.” “It’s more of a dark comedy than people are used to with him — with all his six wives having to come back to plan his funeral after he dies, and all the insane funny things that happen when these different female personalities crash together under these circumstances. My role, actually, I can’t say too much about,” adds the 27-year-old actress of “Step Up” and “The Grudge 2″ fame.
Jenna’s definitely riding the up escalator of Hollywood fame. Her every public appearance with boyfriend Channing Tatum gets chronicled. They were recently in a dance-off on the YouTube “Miley & Mandy Show.” (”How funny is that? … I had no idea how big it had become … Both Miley and Mandy are sweethearts,” she says of Miley Cyrus and Mandy Jiroux.) As for marriage prospects, however, Jenna demurs, “We’ll see. I don’t like to talk about my personal life too much.”
She’s been on a roll shooting movie after movie in recent months, including “Love Lies Bleeding” with Christian Slater and the indie coming-of-age story “Shine On.” She’s scheduled to begin filming “Virgin on Bourbon Street” in August. And then there’s Lifetime’s “Fab Five: The Texas Cheerleader Scandal,” debuting Aug. 2, of which she’s very proud.
Based on a true story, it’s about a group of cheerleaders so out of control they’re drinking alcohol at school, skipping classes and bullying other students. A young coach endeavors to stop them, though administrators and parents seem bent on looking the other way. “Thank God I got to play the coach,” Jenna says. As a young actress, “usually you play the girlfriend. You don’t get to play someone strong. You don’t receive a lot of these kind of really powerful characters that offer role models for women.”

NEWS FLASH: Channing Tatum’s Girlfriend Jenna Dewan to Star in New Movie
February 24, 2008
I wanted to let all of my fellow Fabulous Jenna Dewan Fans know that Channing Tatum’s real-life girlfriend will soon start production on a new movie for Lifetime Television. The Lifetime Original Movie is called ‘Fab Five: The Texas Cheerleader Scandal‘ and also stars Academy Award winner Tatum O’Neal (”Paper Moon,” “Rescue Me”) and Ashley Benson (”Days of Our Lives”).
The new movie is based on a true story that broke in late 2006 and follows the story of a gutsy young teacher (Jenna Dewan) who fights to end the reign of five misbehaving, beautiful, and well-connected cheerleaders who are sadly allowed to do whatever that want at a high school in the Dallas suburb of McKinney.
“The real-life story of these cheerleaders shocked many when the story broke, not only for their racy and inappropriate behavior, but also for the inaction of the school’s administrators and parents,” said Tanya Lopez, Senior Vice President, Original Movies, Lifetime Networks. Adding, “We hope this movie reminds parents how important it is to set limits on their children.”
Here’s a summary of what the story is all about:
In “Fab Five: The Texas Cheerleader Scandal,” Brooke Tippit (Benson), captain of the cheerleading squad and daughter to Principal Lorene Tippit (O’Neal), and her group of friends known as the “Fab Five,” constantly disobey school rules and disregard teachers while administrators turn the other way. But when Emma Carr (Dewan), a bright-eye, optimistic young teacher joins the faculty as the new cheerleading coach, the girls discover they are in for quite a challenge when Emma doesn’t let them get away with breaking the rules as they are use to.
The outrageous antics of the clique quickly escalate from skipping and disrupting classes to extreme partying, posting suggestive photos of themselves on the internet, bullying and other self-destructive behavior. Hoping to protect the girls from endangering themselves and damaging their futures, Emma asks for Principal Tippit’s support in disciplining the girls, but is blindsided with a request for a resignation instead. Frustrated, Emma risks the end to her teaching career by breaking the news of the scandalous conduct of the “Fab Five” and administrators to the local and national media.
