CHANNING TATUM FOR NEWBIES… The ‘DEAR JOHN’ Edition
October 14, 2010
Earlier this year, Channing Tatum kicked off the ‘Dear John’ press tour with a press junket in Los Angeles. I love the junkets, because in addition to hanging out with Chan (which you see in the pic above), Jenna, and the other actors, I get to learn a ton about the films first hand that I can share with you all here on CTU…
In today’s ‘Dear John‘-inspired Channing Tatum for Newbies, you all get your answers “first hand”, because Chan is answering some of your most frequently asked questions. Enjoy!!!
Question:
Have you read “Dear John”?
Chan’s Answer:
Yes
Question:
What’s your favorite scene?
Chan’s Answer:
My favorite scene and the hardest scene to film was the barn scene where John and Savanna see each other for the first time again.
Question:
What attracted you to the role of John?
Chan’s Answer:
There aren’t that many amazing love stories seen through the guy’s point of view, so I thought this was a really interesting opportunity.
Question:
Are you a Nicholas Sparks fan?
Chan’s Answer:
Nicholas Sparks’ work is very beautiful, but this story also has an edge to it that some of the other books didn’t have. I figured it would be a lot of fun to do something a little softer, a little more quite - just sitting and acting for once.
Question:
What is harder…action or drama?
Chan’s Answer:
Action is harder. In emotional scenes, it’s easier to know if you got there or not. I think about losing someone I love.
Question:
Did you meet Nicholas Sparks?
Chan’s Answer:
Yes
Question:
What’s it like to work with Amanda Seyfried?
Chan’s Answer:
Loved it! She’s talented, hilarious, sweet, quirky, witty, cute, nuts, and has he voice of an angel. She brought a sense of irony and humor to the role.
Question:
Does Amanda Seyfried have a twitter?
Chan’s Answer:
She does not.
Question:
What’s it like to work with Henry Thomas?
Chan’s Answer:
Henry might be the best surprise of the movie. He’s such a brilliantly grounded, gentle person, like Lasse.
Question:
What did you like about working with Lasse?
Chan’s Answer:
He has a soft, beautiful energy and gave us the freedom to explore our roles and improvise.
Question:
What’s it like to work with Braeden Reed?
Chan’s Answer:
He is amazing. He was an actor from ‘jump’.
Question:
Do you surf?
Chan’s Answer:
I’m from Florida, but I’ve never been a surfer. I’m totally addicted to it now. I own two boards and surfed on weekends while shooting.
Question:
Where was the movie filmed?
Chan’s Answer:
In the Charleston, SC area. (Sullivan’s Island, Isle of Palms, Folly Beach, College of Charleston, Edisto’s Cassina Point Plantation)
Question:
Did you like filming in Charleston?
Chan’s Answer:
Yes. I love the South. Loved the history and the food.
Question:
Have you ever written a love letter?
Chan’s Answer:
When I was in second grade, my sister Paige said I sent love letters to her friends. In the past few years, I’ve realized that I really like writing.
Question:
What your biggest romantic gesture?
Chan’s Answer:
I had Jenna’s roommate pack clothes for her and surprised her with a trip when we first started dating.
Question:
Is ‘Dear John’ a war movie?
Chan’s Answer:
No. ‘Dear John’ is really all about relationships, first love, and the love between a son and his father.
Question:
What kind of training did you do for the film?
Chan’s Answer:
John is a Green Beret, a member of the US Army’s Special Forces. Although the focus truly is the love story, we had training with special forces soldiers.
Question:
Is it difficult to film love scenes?
Chan’s Answer:
They are hard and very awkward. You just have to have a sense of humor about them.
Question:
Favorite part about doing the film?
Chan’s Answer:
Locations and the cast
Question:
Why would guys want to see this film?
Chan’s Answer:
The father/son story is something that the guys can relate to and the fact that it’s an untraditional love story. The story has a surprising edge to it.
Question:
‘Dear John’ is such an emotional story. Are those types of roles difficult?
Chan’s Answer:
There was a moment during the shooting of Dear John when Chan lost control of his emotions in front of the camera. What happened was that after several takes, Richard Jerkins (who played Chan’s character’s ailing father) spontaneously lifted a hand and touched his son. It was the simplest of gestures but it provided a powerful moment on set — and subsequently on screen. Here’s what he had to say about the scene and working with Richard…
There’s nothing he can’t do. He’ll come off the bench and give you an award-winning performance. He really helped me in that scene. You have a plan for an emotional scene, but you don’t know how it’s going to go. You hope you don’t get in your own head too much and that you have an idea of what you’re going to do — and then something happens, with your partner, the person you’re doing the scene with, and that changes things. It just took me apart. I get emotional now thinking about it because it ripped me open. And…I owe him that scene…I went from ‘G.I. Joe’ to ‘Dear John’. It’s definitely more difficult to come down off of emotional roles than the roles in action films.
Question:
What’s the most romantic thing that someone can do for you?
Chan’s Answer:
Cook me dinner and watch a movie.
Question:
What’s your next movie?
Chan’s Answer:
I’m currently filming a romantic drama called ‘The Vow‘ with Rachel McAdams in Toronto and the comedy ‘The Dilemma‘ with Vince Vaughn and Kevin James will be released in January.
Question:
If you were a soldier, would you be able to leave?
Chan’s Answer:
First and foremost, being a soldier is a sacrifice in itself. If I had to make the choices they make, it would be very difficult to leave.
Question:
Do you remember your first love?
Chan’s Answer:
Sara Cook in Kindergarten. I bought her the Sara Smiles record.
Question:
What’s your ultimate day off?
Chan’s Answer:
Relaxation…Wake up late, order in, watch a good movie, play with my dogs, watch another movie, spend time with those I love
Question:
How similar are you to John?
Chan’s Answer:
We’re both southern boys, got into fair share of trouble, and are hopeless romantics. I’d say I’m 67% John.
Question:
If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you live?
Chan’s Answer:
Places that are closest to everyone I love and that are easy to get to…Alabama, Brazil/Costa Rica, Colorado in the Mountains
Question:
Who are your favorite actors?
Chan’s Answer:
Jackie Gleason and Paul Newman
Question:
What’s your favorite movie(s)?
Chan’s Answer:
‘Goonies’, ‘Hustler’
Question:
Did you always want to act?
Chan’s Answer:
No. I figured out I wanted to act around age 23 or 24. I went from dancing to modeling to commercials to movies.
Question:
Do you keep momentos from your sets?
Chan’s Answer:
I generally will keep the last outfit I wear from each set.

IN THE PRESS: Channing Tatum Reveals Fan Mail Secrets to OK Magazine
April 8, 2010
If you know Channing Tatum for any time at all, then you know that family, friends, and fans are extremely important to him.
So when Channing revealed to CTU years ago that mom Kay was helping him with his fan mail, it didn’t surprise to me one bit. Who better to take care of your fans than the person that’s taken such amazing care of you your entire life?
As you may imagine, Chan gets a ton of fan mail every week, and it’s momma Kay who sorts through letters from all over the world, organizes everything, and spends her precious few moments with her son to make sure that fan autograph requests are filled and shipped back out to destinations far and wide.
Case in point, she just sent me a ton of autographed posters and autographed magazines that Chan signed for all of you. Join the FREE official fan club and stay tuned for future contests here on CTU.
In a recent OK magazine interview from last month’s ‘Dear John‘ UK press tour, Chan talked about his mom and revealed some of the *ahem* interesting fan mail he’s gotten from some dedicated fans…
“I do get quite a bit of fan mail and most of it is just nice normal stuff. But I have had underwear sent to me and one pair had my face on, which was rather weird. My mom sorts through some of it for me and it’s the best job for a mom to do - they love it!”
Although Chan writes short notes and personally signs all of the autograph requests from fans, you won’t really catch him hand writing ‘Dear John‘-style letters like his alter-ego John Tyree. Chan tells OK magazine…
“In the film they wouldn’t let me use my own handwriting for the letters as it looks like a three year old has written or a chicken! I spell everything wrong so writing letters is not my strong point.”
So when you’re trying to figure out what fan mail to send Chan, just remember that momma Kay is probably going to see it first. Maybe you can send her a little thank you note, and if you must send underwear, just make sure it’s respectable. Just sayin’.
