MOVIE BYTES: ‘The Eagle’ and ‘Ten Year Reunion’
July 9, 2010
I found a few bits of news about Channing Tatum’s film ‘The Eagle‘ and Chan and wife Jenna Dewan-Tatum’s new, untitled film that I’m going to call ‘Ten Year Reunion‘. Check out today’s Movie Bytes to get the latest scoop. Enjoy!!!
THE EAGLE
This week Focus Features, the distributor behind Channing Tatum’s Roman drama ‘The Eagle of the Ninth‘, announced that the film has officially been renamed to ‘The Eagle‘.
For those who don’t know, the movie is helmed by award-winning director Kevin Macdonald and is based on the best-selling, classic 1954 teen novel by Rosemary Sutcliff, and is set in the dangerous world of second-century Britain.
In 140 AD, twenty years after the unexplained disappearance of the entire Ninth Legion in the mountains of Scotland, young centurion Marcus Aquila (played by Channing) arrives from Rome to solve the mystery and restore the reputation of his father, the commander of the Ninth. Accompanied only by his British slave Esca (Jamie Bell), Marcus sets out across Hadrian’s Wall into the uncharted highlands of Caledonia - to confront its savage tribes, make peace with his father’s memory, and retrieve the lost legion’s golden emblem, the Eagle of the Ninth. Donald Sutherland portrays Marcus’ uncle Aquila, who has retired in Britain; Mark Strong is cast as Guern, an ex-soldier who holds crucial information about the Ninth.
‘The Eagle‘ is set to hit theaters on February 25, 2011. Fans can CLICK HERE to check out a ton of photos from the film in the CTU Photo Gallery.
TEN YEAR REUNION
As I previously posted, Chan and Jenna filmed a test shoot in the Los Angeles area for a movie they were working on last month and tweeted out a lot of great behind-the-scenes pics from the shoot.
The film short was directed by Jamie Linden (who wrote the ‘Dear John‘ screenplay) and included friends and fellow actors Haylie Duff, Nick Zano, ‘The Hurt Locker’s Brian Geraghty (Jenna’s ‘Love Lies Bleeding‘ co-star), and Kate Mara.
In the pic below, you have (from right to left) Chan, Jamie Linden, Jenna, and Reid Carolin (Chan and Jenna’s producing partner at 33andOut) on the set of the film short on June 12th.
I also have a few more details about the test shoot courtesy of ‘Twilight’ Saga producer Wyck Godfrey who’s producing partner, Marty Bowen (’Dear John‘), is working on the new film. While doing interviews for the recent release of ‘Eclipse’, Wyck told Fearnet.com and Collider.com that the project…
“is a ten-year high school reunion movie that Jamie Linden, who wrote Dear John, is writing and directing, and hopefully Channing Tatum and a bunch of his buddies are going to do it.”
It’s not a whole lot, but it’s a little more than we knew before and has me hopeful that ‘Ten Year Reunion‘ (or whatever it ends up being called) could be the next film where we get to see Chan and Jenna together on the big screen again. Fingers crossed!!!

CHANNING TATUM MOVIE BYTES: ‘G.I. Joe 2′ and ‘Eagle of the Ninth’ Update
May 27, 2010
As Channing Tatum prepares for his comedic role in Ron Howard and Vince Vaughn’s comedy ‘Cheaters‘ (which he starts filming next month), I want to share a few bits of news about Chan’s upcoming films ‘G.I. Joe 2‘ and ‘Eagle of the Ninth‘. Check out today’s Movie Bytes to get the latest scoop. Enjoy!!!
G.I. JOE 2
Fans are constantly asking about G.I. Joe 2, the upcoming sequel to Chan’s $300-plus million grossing action film G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra. Recently, MTV News caught up with Lorenzo di Bonaventura, the executive producer for both G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra and G.I. Joe 2.
Although Bonaventura didn’t give a ton of details, he did tell MTV News that they are currently working on the script with writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (”Zombieland”). He also mentioned that Paramount is very excited about getting the movie going, and they’ll possibly begin filming in the Spring of 2011. They’re also hoping for a Summer 2012 release.
EAGLE OF THE NINTH
Back in February, we got a glimpse of Channing Tatum in his Roman drama ‘The Eagle of the Ninth‘ when the trailer played before ‘Dear John‘, and the film also had at least one test screening in Paramus, New Jersey on May 6th. Beyond that and the release of a few promotional/fan/set photos from the film, we haven’t had a ton of updates on the film…until today that is.
Focus Features officially announced a new release date for Channing Tatum’s Roman drama ‘The Eagle of the Ninth‘. Instead of the original September 24th release date, ‘The Eagle of the Ninth‘ will now open nationwide on Friday, February 25th, 2011. So it looks like fans will have to wait a little longer to see Chan in his full on Roman glory, but I’m sure it’ll be worth the wait!
The Roman epic adventure, currently in post-production, is directed by Academy Award winner Kevin Macdonald and produced by Academy Award and Golden Globe Award nominee Duncan Kenworthy. Jeremy Brock, BAFTA Award-winning screenwriter of Mr. Macdonald’s 2006 film The Last King of Scotland, has adapted the screenplay from Rosemary Sutcliff’s classic novel of the same name.
‘The Eagle of the Ninth‘ is set in the dangerous world of second-century Britain. In 140 AD, twenty years after the unexplained disappearance of the entire Ninth Legion in the mountains of Scotland, young centurion Marcus Aquila (played by Channing) arrives from Rome to solve the mystery and restore the reputation of his father, the commander of the Ninth. Accompanied only by his British slave Esca (Jamie Bell), Marcus sets out across Hadrian’s Wall into the uncharted highlands of Caledonia – to confront its savage tribes, make peace with his father’s memory, and retrieve the lost legion’s golden emblem, the Eagle of the Ninth. The movie also stars Donald Sutherland, Mark Strong, and Tahar Rahim.

RUMOR OR REEL?: ‘Captain America’ Casting and ‘Dear John’ DVD Release
March 17, 2010
Busy is an understatement when it comes to Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan-Tatum.
He just wrapped filming on the Steven Soderbergh’s 2011 action-revenge spy thriller ‘Knockout‘ in Arizona and will soon head across the pond to do a short press tour in the UK for ‘Dear John‘ before he does some additional work on his Roman drama ‘Eagle of the Ninth‘ and starts filming Dito Montiel’s ‘Son of No One‘ in April. Just thinking about all that makes me tired.
As Jenna (who’ll start filming her next project and kick off her PETA campaign in the next few weeks) just tweeted on her recently verified Twitter account, she and Chan just returned home after a short vacation, and while the newlyweds are away, the entertainment bloggers and reporters will play…
Deadline Hollywood, Hollywood Reporter, Entertainment Weekly, and tons of other news outlets are reporting that Marvel is now interested in Chan for the highly sought-after role of Captain America. Here’s what Nikke Finke over at Deadline Hollywood had to say about the rumor…
“While Marvel Studios and director Joe Johnston continue to test candidates for The First Avenger: Captain America, I’m told that Marvel has also made an approach to Channing Tatum. Coming off G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra and Dear John, I would be surprised if he went in to test for the role., now that he’s become a bankable commodity. It’ll come down to Marvel making an offer, and Tatum either accepting it or rejecting it. But he is definitely in the mix, along with other confirmed candidates that include Fantastic Four’s Chris Evans, Cloverfield’s Mike Vogel and Tron Legacy’s Garrett Hedlund, and Generation Kill’s Wilson Bethel. Reports have Ryan Phillippe also vying for the job….Marvel Studios is also testing leads for the female role of Peggy. While Marvel is looking for an American actor to play Captain America, the candidates for the female lead are British. So far, Keira Knightley, Alice Eve and Emily Blunt are under consideration. Blunt is known to be a favorite of Marvel brass She was offered the role of Black Widow in Iron Man 2, until Fox exercised an option it held on the actress and put her into Gulliver’s Travels. Scarlett Johansson took the role.”
Sources tell Entertainment Weekly that Captain America is set to begin filming in June for a release next summer, will be shot on location in London, and will feature a stylized 1940s WWII backdrop where the super hero battles Red Skull, Hitler’s right-hand man.
Marvel also plans on releasing an Avengers film in summer 2012 and Captain America is a father figure to the rest of the Avengers, which means Marvel is actually casting this role for at least two different films.
If this rumor is true, fans don’t have to wonder if Chan wants to play Captain America or not. Here’s what he told MTV last year when news first broke that he was a potential candidate for the role…
“I would love to play Captain America. I actually really, really would love it. I love Captain America. I’m not a big aficionado on him, but I know who we was, and I like him as a character.”
Marvel will be casting Captain America soon, so I’ll definitely let you know what happens with this one!
One thing I CAN confirm is that Chan’s highly-successful romantic drama ‘Dear John‘ will be released on DVD and Blu-ray in the US soon. I have heard that US (and probably Canadian) fans may be able to buy them as soon as May 25th. Once all of the DVD/Blu-ray details are released, I’ll post them here on CTU.

EAGLE OF THE NINTH

SON OF NO ONE
Deadline Hollywood is reporting that Channing Tatum’s dramatic thriller ‘Son of No One‘ just acquired a new distributor overseas. Here’s what Deadline Hollywood’s founder and editor Nikki Finke had to say about the film’s status and casting…
“Channing Tatum’s weekend success in Dear John comes at an auspicious time, as Nu Image takes over world sales agent duties in Berlin on what it says is his Son Of No One. Though UTA says there’s no deal yet with its client, Channing is the draw in a drama that reunites him with writer/director Dito Montiel, with whom he made Fighting and A Guide To Recognizing Your Saints. The Montiel-scripted thriller is about a young cop who is at odds with his superiors and fellow officers over a murder cover-up. NuImage says Tatum’s co-stars would be Katie Holmes, Terrence Howard, Ray Liotta and Al Pacino. Shooting begins April in New York. Hannibal Pictures put the pic together, with Millennium Films as producer.”
In a recent Collider.com interview, Chan had this to say about the film when asked if his next Dito Montiel film was totally different from ‘A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints’…
“It’s Saints-esque really. It’s like the grown-up “Saints.” Where “Saints” focused in on the kids, it’ll be flip-flopped. It’ll be focused on adults this time with kids as well. Look, that guy’s lived a crazy life and he’s known a lot of crazy people and this will be a true story or pieces of it, and it’ll be insane - (Robert) DeNiro, Ray Liotta, I don’t know if Terrence Howard is going to be in it, I think he might, and a bunch of other people with some really strong personalities coming in. It’s like a psycho cop New York thriller and it’ll be Dito-esque again. With “Fighting,” we just tried to go and do something fun, and then this is him going back and swinging for the fence again into his crazy mind. It’s an independent film so he’ll be allowed to do whatever he wants.”
‘Son of No One‘ is currently scheduled to be released in 2011.
KNOCKOUT
As Chan posted in his Post The Love Valentine’s Day message to fans, he’s headed off to Dublin, Ireland to shoot Steven Soderbergh’s action-revenge spy thriller ‘Knockout‘. In case you missed it, here’s Chan V-Day message to fans…
“My love goes out all this beautiful day of love!! So sorry I’ve been gone for the last few days. Things have been crazy with the film and I had to get ready to go to dublin for a new job. that will take me away from the ones I love in my life. Especially my wife, sorry baby. Anyways I will be post more soon. Love you guys.”
The movie will star Mixed Martial Arts champion and non-actor Gina Carano in the lead role as a black ops spy that is betrayed by her team. Chan (who will also film some of ‘Knockout‘ in Barcelona, Spain) will play one of the elite specialists on Carano’s team named Aaron — a military gearhead-type who’s sent to try and bring her back in once she’s been double-crossed and gone rogue; trying to figure out who exactly is setting her up. But there is no love lost between the characters which makes his mission more difficult.
The movie also stars Ewan McGregor, Michael Douglas, and Michael Fassbender and is scheduled to hit theaters some time in 2010 or 2011.

I wanted to let you all know that Focus Pictures just released an official Facebook page for Channing Tatum’s Roman drama ‘The Eagle of the Ninth‘. Make sure you fan the page to get the latest photos, videos, and scoop on the film, which is now set to hit theaters in September 2010.

IN THE PRESS: Channing Tatum in Details, Instyle, Entertainment Weekly, Intouch, and OK Magazine
January 18, 2010
Channing Tatum is all over the magazines lately, the most I’ve honestly ever seen in a single week. Fans can find Chan in the latest issues of Details (February 2010), Instyle (February 2010), Entertainment Weekly (January 22nd) for both ‘Dear John‘ and ‘Eagle of the Ninth‘, Intouch (January 25th), AND OK (January 25th) magazine, and you can check out all the high quality scans for each on today’s post in the CTU Photo Gallery.
In addition to being featured in the print magazine, Chan and his upcoming movie ‘Eagle of the Ninth‘ were also featured on Entertainment Weekly’s website this week. Here’s EW’s first look at ‘Eagle‘…
“…EW chatted with Tatum last week about the movie in question, The Eagle of the Ninth, which Focus Features will release this fall. “It’s almost like an old western, like The Searchers,” Tatum said, while pointing out that the film’s still very much an epic in the tradition of Gladiator and Braveheart. “Are you going to get big, huge battles and things you’d expect in an epic? Yeah, absolutely. But it’s smarter than just a big epic. It’s more of a personal, relationship story about these two guys that have to go on this journey together.”
Tatum plays Marcus Aquila, a Roman army officer in 140 A.D. whose father was the commander of the legendary Ninth Legion — a unit of soldiers that mysteriously disappeared 20 years earlier in the mountains of present-day Scotland while trying to conquer the region’s various Celtic tribes. For Aquila, the legion’s presumed defeat has brought considerable shame to the family, so he decides to embark on a quest into those northern tribal lands in hopes of learning exactly what happened to his dad. Accompanying Aquila is his British slave Esca, played by Jamie Bell (King Kong, Billy Elliot). “They’re really just two broken, lonely people,” said Tatum. “They welcome death, and then they find a reason to live and a purpose and honor through this journey.”
The Eagle of the Ninth is directed by Scottish filmmaker and documentarian Kevin Macdonald (The Last King of Scotland, Touching the Void), so naturally the movie was shot in Scotland for maximum authenticity. And with authenticity comes extreme weather conditions. “Scotland might have been one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen, but it hated us,” Tatum confessed. “I have never imagined conditions like this. You’d look around the set and all you could see would be two inches in front of you. It was raining every single day, and Jamie and I would be on the back of a horse, freezing and soaked to the bone. When you see us cold and tired and shivering in the movie, none of that’s acting!”…”
‘Eagle of the Ninth‘ is scheduled to hit theaters this summer! Fans can check out photos from the film in the CTU Photo Gallery, and you can CLICK HERE to get the latest news on the movie.
Finally, you can find all of the magazines I mentioned above on newsstands right now, so make sure to run out and get your copies!!!
