Check Out the Official Facebook Page for Channing Tatum’s ‘Eagle of the Ninth’

January 29, 2010

I wanted to let you all know that Focus Pictures just released an official Facebook page for Channing Tatum’s Roman drama ‘The Eagle of the Ninth‘. Make sure you fan the page to get the latest photos, videos, and scoop on the film, which is now set to hit theaters in September 2010.

The Eagle of the Ninth‘ is helmed by award-winning director Kevin Macdonald and is based on the best-selling, classic 1954 teen novel by Rosemary Sutcliff, and is set in the dangerous world of second-century Britain.

In 140 AD, twenty years after the unexplained disappearance of the entire Ninth Legion in the mountains of Scotland, young centurion Marcus Aquila (played by Channing) arrives from Rome to solve the mystery and restore the reputation of his father, the commander of the Ninth.

Accompanied only by his British slave Esca (Jamie Bell), Marcus sets out across Hadrian’s Wall into the uncharted highlands of Caledonia - to confront its savage tribes, make peace with his father’s memory, and retrieve the lost legion’s golden emblem, the Eagle of the Ninth. Donald Sutherland portrays Marcus’ uncle Aquila, who has retired in Britain; Mark Strong is cast as Guern, an ex-soldier who holds crucial information about the Ninth.

IN THE PRESS: Channing Tatum in Details, Instyle, Entertainment Weekly, Intouch, and OK Magazine

January 18, 2010

Channing Tatum is all over the magazines lately, the most I’ve honestly ever seen in a single week. Fans can find Chan in the latest issues of Details (February 2010), Instyle (February 2010), Entertainment Weekly (January 22nd) for both ‘Dear John‘ and ‘Eagle of the Ninth‘, Intouch (January 25th), AND OK (January 25th) magazine, and you can check out all the high quality scans for each on today’s post in the CTU Photo Gallery.

In addition to being featured in the print magazine, Chan and his upcoming movie ‘Eagle of the Ninth‘ were also featured on Entertainment Weekly’s website this week. Here’s EW’s first look at ‘Eagle‘…

“…EW chatted with Tatum last week about the movie in question, The Eagle of the Ninth, which Focus Features will release this fall. “It’s almost like an old western, like The Searchers,” Tatum said, while pointing out that the film’s still very much an epic in the tradition of Gladiator and Braveheart. “Are you going to get big, huge battles and things you’d expect in an epic? Yeah, absolutely. But it’s smarter than just a big epic. It’s more of a personal, relationship story about these two guys that have to go on this journey together.”
Tatum plays Marcus Aquila, a Roman army officer in 140 A.D. whose father was the commander of the legendary Ninth Legion — a unit of soldiers that mysteriously disappeared 20 years earlier in the mountains of present-day Scotland while trying to conquer the region’s various Celtic tribes. For Aquila, the legion’s presumed defeat has brought considerable shame to the family, so he decides to embark on a quest into those northern tribal lands in hopes of learning exactly what happened to his dad. Accompanying Aquila is his British slave Esca, played by Jamie Bell (King Kong, Billy Elliot). “They’re really just two broken, lonely people,” said Tatum. “They welcome death, and then they find a reason to live and a purpose and honor through this journey.”
The Eagle of the Ninth is directed by Scottish filmmaker and documentarian Kevin Macdonald (The Last King of Scotland, Touching the Void), so naturally the movie was shot in Scotland for maximum authenticity. And with authenticity comes extreme weather conditions. “Scotland might have been one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen, but it hated us,” Tatum confessed. “I have never imagined conditions like this. You’d look around the set and all you could see would be two inches in front of you. It was raining every single day, and Jamie and I would be on the back of a horse, freezing and soaked to the bone. When you see us cold and tired and shivering in the movie, none of that’s acting!”…”

Eagle of the Ninth‘ is scheduled to hit theaters this summer! Fans can check out photos from the film in the CTU Photo Gallery, and you can CLICK HERE to get the latest news on the movie.

Finally, you can find all of the magazines I mentioned above on newsstands right now, so make sure to run out and get your copies!!!

FIRST LOOK: Channing Tatum in ‘The Eagle of the Ninth’

November 11, 2009

Channing Tatum is days away from wrapping on his Roman epic ‘The Eagle of the Ninth‘ in Scotland (the crew was recently spotted near Windyhill Cottage in the village of Altandhu). Thanks to the movie news site Collider.com we have a first look at Chan in what’s going to be one of the biggest films in 2010.

Collider.com got a sneak peek at next year’s big films at the American Film Market recently, which is where film distributors are given an opportunity to buy the rights for new projects and where currently-in-production films go to find more financing.

Festivals like this have gone very well for the film thus far. ‘The Eagle of the Ninth‘ became a 2009 Cannes Film Festival hit because of its strong script, cast and director and the success of similar productions such as ‘Gladiator’ and the American HBO series “Rome”, starring Scot Kevin McKidd. The $23 million epic that is helmed by ‘State of Play’ director Kevin Macdonald and stars Channing Tatum, Jamie Bell, and Donald Sutherland has already lined up distributors all over the world.

Below you’ll find the official plot breakdown for ‘The Eagle of the Ninth‘. This is the most detailed summary we’ve gotten for the movie thus far, so I would like to warn that there may be a few spoilers in the synopsis…

“Newly arrived in Britannia on his first command, young Centurion Marcus Aquila (Channing Tatum) heroically defends his ford against a massive Celtic attack but is so badly wounded that he is discharged from the army. Angry and bitter that his army career is over, Marcus chooses to risk his life on a seemingly impossible journey into the unconquered north to find the Eagle of the Ninth, the legendary golden standard lost fifteen years earlier when his father marched the Ninth Legion into the wilds of Scotland and never came back. As a companion, he takes his slave Esca (Jamie Bell), a Celt whose life he saved in a gladiatorial contest but who hates all things Roman. Their journey together into the wild north forgers the beginnings of a precarious relationship between them. But when they are captured by the Seal People, the most feared of all the Celtic tribes and the guardians of the lost Eagle, Esca claims that he is the master and Marcus his Roman slave - and Marcus has no choice but to entrust himself into the Celt’s hands. Just as Marcus fears Esca’s loyalty is lost and he is to remain a slave for life, the Celt proves true to his friend. Together they manage to retrieve the Eagle from an island temple and, keeping one step ahead of their pursuers in a thrilling chase to the safety of the border, they take a stand in a final, unexpected battle that reveals the secret of the Ninth.”

The Eagle of the Ninth‘ is scheduled to hit theaters some time in the third quarter of 2010.
