NEWS FLASH: Check Out the New Contest and HBO Special for Channing Tatum’s ‘Public Enemies’
June 26, 2009
One critic who recently screened Channing Tatum’s highly-anticipated historical drama ‘Public Enemies‘ raved about the film saying it “is glorious and levitational — the most captivating, beautifully composed and freshly conceived gangster movie since Bonnie and Clyde. It’s an art film first, a Mann head-and-heart trip second, a classic machine-gun action pulverizer third, and a conventional popcorn movie fourth.”
In case you haven’t seen it yet, I also wanted to let everyone know about Universal’s new BankRaids.com website where fans can become Public Enemy #1 by playing their Bank Raid Game and can even create a Wanted Poster in your own likeness.
Universal Pictures has just launched Bank Raids, an online game and microsite that marries the 1930’s Chicago gang milieu with Facebook and Twitter to promote the film.
The Bank Raids game challenges users to rise to the notorious level of criminal infamy that Public Enemies’ main character, John Dillinger, achieved back in the 30s. Bank Raids offers a pretty intricate, yet simple, game play experience where you can rob banks, recruit gang members, buy guns, increase your notoriety, and hopefully avoid the long arm of the law.
On the site, fans in the UK, Australia, Austria, Germany, Korea, Mexico, The Netherlands, Spain, and Switzerland can also enter their new competition. CLICK HERE to get all of the contest details.
If you missed HBO’s “first look” at ‘Public Enemies‘, then you’re in luck! You can watch Part 1 and Part 2 of the special below. For the first time, you’ll even see Chan (Pretty Boy Floyd) get shot by Christian Bale (Melvin Purvis) in their action-packed scene around the 3:15 mark of the first video…
Finally, you can watch a ton of new ‘Public Enemies’ clips, trailers, tv spots, and press junket interviews with Johnny Depp, Christian Bale, Marion Coutillard, and director Michael Mann at TrailerAddict.com.
‘Public Enemies‘ hits US and UK theaters on July 1, 2009.
NEWS FLASH: Official Website Update, Premiere Info, and New TV Spot for Channing Tatum’s ‘Public Enemies’
June 14, 2009
Universal Studios has updated the official website for Channing Tatum’s next film ‘Public Enemies‘. You’ll find new downloads, video clips, photos, character information, and more on the site, so make sure to check it out!
In the graphic above, you see the first official photo of Chan as 1930’s gangster Pretty Boy Floyd who never wore a mask, was dapper and polite, and reveled in his reputation as a gentleman thief. Floyd became a bank robber to escape his dirt-poor upbringing among the cotton-pickers of Oklahoma (robbing at least 30 banks and murdering 10 men in the process). Legend has it he handed out the proceeds of his crimes to poverty-stricken homesteaders.
Here’s what the PE official website has to saw about Chan’s character…
-
“Charles “Pretty Boy” Floyd was twenty-one when he was arrested in 1925 for robbing a payroll shipment in St. Louis. He was sentenced to five years in prison, emerging determined to avoid future jail time. He descended into the St. Louis crime world, developing a gang with a penchant for robbing banks. The Floyd Gang quickly became a Bureau (later the FBI) target, particularly after the “Kansas City Massacre.” This attempt to wrest a fellow gang member from custody became a bloody shoot-out which left a Special Agent and a police chief dead. After two more bloody shoot-outs that year, Floyd was finally taken down on October 22, 1934 by Melvin Purvis of the Bureau.”
In addition to a Los Angeles premiere Tuesday, June 23rd at Majestic Crest Theatre at 1262 Westwood Blvd in Westwood, CA at 7:30pm, the movie is also going to have a red carpet premiere in London Monday, June 29th at Empire Cinema on the north side of Leicester Square and Paris Thursday, July 2nd at 8pm at UGC Normandie. Johnny Depp, Marion Cotillard, and acclaimed film director Michael Mann are scheduled to attend all of the premieres.
‘Public Enemies‘ hits US theaters on July 1, 2009 and was originally scheduled to be released in the UK on July 3. I am now seeing release information HERE and HERE that implies the release date may have been moved up to July 1st for the UK, so be on the lookout for the film.
Fans can CLICK HERE to get a current list of international release dates for the film, and don’t miss a “first look” at the film on HBO beginning on June 16th. Check your local listings to get show times.

IN THE PRESS: Channing Tatum and ‘Public Enemies’ Featured in the UK’s Empire Magazine
May 29, 2009
The July 1st release date for Channing Tatum’s upcoming Depression-era crime drama ‘ Public Enemies‘ is quickly approaching, and Empire Magazine just released a huge expose on the film in their July 2009 issue.
Based on the New York Times Best Selling author Bryan Burrough’s true crime book, ‘ Public Enemies‘ follows the FBI hunt for 1930’s gangster John Dillinger.
The Universal Studios film is directed by Michael Mann and boasts a stunning cast that includes Channing Tatum, Johnny Depp, Marion Cotillard, Christian Bale, Branka Katic, Billy Crudup, Giovanni Ribisi, Emilie de Ravin, John Michael Bolger, Stephen Dorff, Christian Stolte and Leelee Sobieski.
Here’s what Empire Magazine had to say about the film that’s at the top of their summer movie watching list…
- Public Enemies: Johnny Depp. Michael Mann. Christian Bale. The question is why you’re still here reading this instead of booking tickets for Public Enemies, the Mann film that casts Depp as legendary 1930s gangster John Dillinger and Bale as Melvin Purvis, the FBI agent assigned to track him down. We talked to the filmmakers (including Oscar-winner Marion Cotillard) to get the full story on the film’s history – which goes back to a script Mann wrote in the 1970s) and see what we can expect from this latest Mann opus. Also, Kim Newman lays out the 20 Greatest Gangster Movies You’ve Probably Never Seen.
…and I also have high-quality scans of the full article for your reading pleasure:
Finally, here’s an awesome new review of the film from the movie site Ramasscreen.com:
-
PUBLIC ENEMIES is what Firepower is all about. You’ll never see a more exciting gunfight and shoot out this year. Director Michael Mann has crafted the ultimate cat-and-mouse game,… his best work yet. Non stop thriller action that takes only a few minutes to breathe in between before it takes you down again for a joy ride. Christian Bale and Johnny Depp are charismatic and unstoppable, the new Robert De Niro and Al Pacino of Heat. You’re gonna wanna see PUBLIC ENEMIES again and again. It makes you wanna get a tommy gun. Hands down, one of the best movies of the year.
- In the action-thriller “Public Enemies,” acclaimed filmmaker Michael Mann directs Johnny Depp, Christian Bale and Academy Award® winner Marion Cotillard in the story of legendary Depression-era outlaw John Dillinger (Depp)—the charismatic bank robber whose lightning raids made him the number one target of J. Edgar Hoover’s fledgling FBI and its top agent, Melvin Purvis (Bale), and a folk hero to much of the downtrodden public. No one could stop Dillinger and his gang. No jail could hold him. His charm and audacious jailbreaks endeared him to almost everyone—from his girlfriend Billie Frechette (Cotillard) to an American public who had no sympathy for the banks that had plunged the country into the Depression. But while the adventures of Dillinger’s gang—later including the sociopathic Baby Face Nelson (Stephen Graham) and Alvin Karpis (Giovanni Ribisi)—thrilled many, Hoover (Billy Crudup) hit on the idea of exploiting the outlaw’s capture as a way to elevate his Bureau of Investigation into the national police force that became the FBI. He made Dillinger America’s first Public Enemy Number One and sent in Purvis, the dashing “Clark Gable of the FBI.”.
-
I’m a big fan of Michael Mann’s work…Mann’s return with PUBLIC ENEMIES doesn’t disappoint. When I got to meet him briefly at a screening, I knew I was in the presence of somebody’s just downright awesome. You can tell from PUBLIC ENEMIES that he’s brought back his signature marks, signs where you can easily tell it’s a Mann’s movie. He doesn’t try to come up with CG backdrop to give us a sight of an old 1930s city, he puts the camera on a tight leash and just focus on the characters and the art deco buildings. And just like his other action/thriller movies in the past, it always ends in the evening or there’ll be a massive showdown between two opposing parties in the middle of the dead night. Mann knows what the audiences would be rooting for in this type of movie, he makes sure that when Dillinger and his men make their getaway after a robbing a bank, they’d do it in style. Cinematographer Dante Spinottie who’s worked with Mann before knows what the master filmmaker wants and what we get are shots that give that reality impression and definitely heavy emphasis on the well-choreographed violence. I enjoy how the movie likes to keep using Otis Taylor’s catchy song ‘Ten Million Slaves’, somehow it fits perfectly in the presentation.
- Johnny Depp is the epitome of cool, he knows it and uses it to the fullest for this role. His character John Dillinger’s got enough charm and confidence to spare but only has eyes for one lady. If you thought the way Jack Sparrow carried himself was infectious, wait til you see how Johnny Depp plays John Dillinger, he’s a bad guy who loves being infamous. The unlikely Robin Hood in a time of Great Depression when people could care less about the banks he robs.
- Christian Bale who plays special Agent Melvin Purvis assigned to hunt down Dillinger, is as excellent as Depp. It’s like having 2 heavyweight fighters in a ring and the match is long overdue. They both keep each other on their toes.
- Bale has been known as an actor who can listen well and mimic any accent. He puts down a great effort to sound like he wasn’t born in Wales.
-
Great star-studded cast overall, Michael Mann’s lucky enough to have excellent actors signing up from left and right to play both members of the gang and members of the FBI including Billy Crudup who captures young Edgar Hoover’s insecure, arrogant and stubborn personality down pat. Marion Cotillard gives a great supporting performance as the girlfriend who’s willing to risk everything for a man she barely knows. She’s not an easy woman for Dillinger to conquer.
- What really will get you hooked, once again, is the cat and mouse game. Purvis catches Dillinger but Dillinger gets away, Purvis closing in on Dillinger but Dillinger is one step ahead of all of them. You see many different ways it’s done throughout the entire movie and you’ll get entertained every single time. Just when you thought the bad guy’s captured and the good guy gets all the gory, the game begins again.
- I’m glad Mann decided to take the story up a notch by not just making it about Dillinger Vs. Purvis, it’s about what would happen when a man is pushed to the point of desperation. You never work with or never ever trust a desperate man, that’s the theme that you see in the character development. Both Dillinger and Purvis are good at what they do, but then circumstances happen that would turn them into desperate men. Alienated by his business partners, Dillinger starts to lose what makes him hard to catch in the first place. Without realizing it he starts to create predictable patterns and habits that would eventually get him easily fooled, he becomes unaware of unwanted surprises . Pressured by Edgar Hoover, Melvin Purvis finds himself allowing certain methods to get Dillinger, the ends justify the means is the result. Some say that Michael Mann’s endings rarely hit the level of satisfactory, I say PUBLIC ENEMIES’ ending won’t let you down, without being too extravagant, it concludes itself just the right way. (5 out of 5)

IN THE PRESS: Channing Tatum Featured in May 2009’s Interview Magazine
April 29, 2009
As I mentioned in a previous post earlier this month, Channing Tatum is featured in the May 2009 issue of Interview Magazine with British actress Emma Watson (star of this summer’s ‘Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince’) on the cover.
Fans can read the new article in its entirety below where Chan’s good friend and ‘G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra‘ co-star Marlon Wayans interviews him for the magazine.
If you know anything about Marlon or the Wayans family from which he comes (aka Comedy Royalty), then you should not be surprised at how hilarious this interview is. Chan even talks about some of the cleaner practical jokes they played on the set of ‘G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra‘ that may have left an assistant director a little “salty” (and I’ve been sworn to secrecy on one of the not-so-clean ones that they elude to in the interview).
Via Marlon’s questions, we find out a lot of new, personal info about Chan. We learn what scares him, what’s his favorite place in the world, what’s his idea of heaven, does he think he could win ‘Dancing with the Stars‘, what’s his slogan in life, who’s his surrogate mom, what he has to say to the past haters in his life and much, much more. Enjoy!!!

NEWS FLASH: Premiere Dates and New International Trailer for Channing Tatum’s ‘Public Enemies’
April 11, 2009
After the release of the highly-anticipated first trailer for Channing Tatum’s upcoming historical drama ‘Public Enemies‘ last month, it’s been kind of quiet, but I now have some premiere news and a new international trailer for you all.
First of all, the premiere for ‘Public Enemies‘ will be held on June 23, 2009 in Los Angeles, California at the Mann Village Theatre Westwood.
For those fans who aren’t lucky enough to live in the LA area, the Wisconsin Film Commission will also be holding screenings and parties prior to the release of the film. Although they have not confirmed if the cast or director will be attending, fans will be able watch the film a day early and in style…
JSOnline.com is reporting that ‘Public Enemies‘ will return to the scene of the crime for screenings and parties across Wisconsin on June 30, 2009.
The events, to be held the day before the film opens nationwide, were announced by Scott Robbe, executive director of Film Wisconsin, the group that functions as the state’s film commission.
The screening events will have a 1930s theme, and a party will be held at the Milwaukee County Historical Society Museum, 910 N. Old World 3rd St., which was one of the locations for the filming. A screening will follow at Marcus Majestic Cinema, 770 Springdale Road, Brookfield, with proceeds benefiting the museum.
A Madison screening will be held at the Marcus Point Cinema; the location of the Madison party is yet to be determined. In Oshkosh, the party will take place at Wittman Field, which was a location in the filming, and will feature cars and planes used in the film. The film will be shown on two screens at Marcus Oshkosh Cinemas, benefiting the Oshkosh Facade Program for preservation of historic areas in the city, where filming took place.
Film tickets will be $50 for VIP seating and $25 for general seating. Separate party tickets are required, and information on how to obtain tickets will be announced closer to the events. All three events also will benefit Film Wisconsin.

CHANNING TATUM MOVIE BYTES: ‘Public Enemies’, ‘Step Up 3D’, ‘Pinkville’ and ‘G.I. Joe’
March 23, 2009
I found a few bits of news about Channing Tatum’s films ‘Public Enemies‘ , ‘Step Up 3-D‘ (not officially his film, but news regardless), ‘Pinkville‘, and ‘G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra‘ this past week. Check out today’s Channing Tatum Movie Bytes to get the latest scoop. Enjoy!!!
PUBLIC ENEMIES
Entertainment Weekly declared the trailer for Channing Tatum’s real-life crime drama ‘Public Enemies‘ a “must see” last week. Here’s what they had to say about the highly-anticipated film…
- “Hat rakishly tilted, machine gun at the ready, Johnny Depp looks like he’s having a blast playing bank robber John Dillinger in the Michael Mann drama, also starring Christian Bale and Oscar winner Marion Cotillard. Between this and Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds, we’ve got two gritty period shoot-’em-ups to look forward to this year.”
If you haven’t seen the trailer yet, CLICK HERE to check it out now!!! Also, at Ain’t It Cool News we get another couple of reviews of the film. Here’s a highlight from one of the reviewers…
- “Had the chance to see a very early screening of Michael Mann’s Public Enemies tonight and wanted to share some thoughts with you all. A few spoilers here so tread with caution.First off, it’s incredibly entertaining. Unlike other biopics, this one drops you right into story. No flashbacks of Johnny Dillinger extorting kids on the playground, the movie begins with Johnny Depp’s Dillinger and his crew knocking over a bank with precision and style. On the other side of the law, Christian Bale’s G-Man Purvis starts the movie hunting down Pretty Boy Floyd. It’s an interesting and welcome approach. Here’s a cop, here’s a robber. Go.
- Along the way, Dillinger picks up a girlfriend (the beautiful Marion Cotillard) and Purvis is appointed the head of the task force by J Edgar Hoover (a more clothed, and less blue Billy Crudup.) The next two plus hours is basically focused on Dillinger and how he made his name. As I mentioned, I found it very entertaining…70% of the movie is Dillinger robbing, shooting, and charming his way across Iowa and Illinois.”
‘Public Enemies‘ is set to hit US theaters on July 1, 2009.
STEP UP 3-D
I knew that watching all of those episodes of Scoobie Doo, Matlock, and Murder She Wrote would pay off one day. I was able to crack the case of the un-named dance movie that director Jon M. Chu mentions in a video he released on his Youtube channel last week. Here’s how I broke the case wide open (as they say)…
Via a tweet from Production Weekly last month, I learned that ‘Step Up 3-D‘ is scheduled to start filming in May in New York City. Since we know that ‘Step Up 2: The Streets‘ director Jon M. Chu, break out star Adam Sevani, and dancer/actress Alyson Stoner (Chan’s foster sister from ‘Step Up‘) will be returning in the third installment of the extremely popular ‘Step Up‘ films, I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that ‘Step Up 3-D‘ is the un-named dance movie that Jon is referring to in his video. Plus, he also confirms the fact that he’s currently working on his next film in New York. Honestly, I really didn’t even have to pull out my trusty detective kit for this one.
Jon is looking for unique dancers to audition by submitting videos via Youtube, and the deadline is this Wednesday (March 25th), so dancers should get their submissions in fast if you want a chance to be a part of ‘Step Up 3-D‘! You can watch Jon’s video below to learn all about the auditions…
It’s my understanding that ‘Step Up 3-D‘ is supposed to hit an IMAX theater near you some time in 2010.
PINKVILLE
In a recent MTV interview director Oliver Stone eluded to the fact that the ‘Pinkville‘ project that Channing is slated to star in, but was postponed around the time of the infamous 2007 writer’s strike, may not be as “dead” as previously thought. You can read Stone’s response below that gives fans of the yet-to-be-made film a little hope…
- “One project that Stone is sticking by is “Pinkville,” a feature about the 1968 My Lai massacre in Vietnam, which was set to film with Bruce Willis, Woody Harrelson and Cam Gigandet until the writers’ strike interrupted development in late 2007. “‘Pinkville’ is not dead,” Stone said of what would be his fourth film about that war. “I own it. I could activate it again. I don’t know if the time is right now with the Iraq War still going on, but I love that project and it’s an important one. My Lai is a forgotten piece of history that’s crucial to remember. You never know, these things come alive.”
G.I. JOE: RISE OF COBRA
Last week, Channing Tatum’s ‘G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra‘ had another screening, but this time Paramount Pictures showed a five-minute “sizzle reel” of footage to journalists, exhibitors, and executives in Sydney, Australia. Below, you can read a recap of the footage shown via the Australian movie news site Dark Horizons…
- “Until now the only footage screened from the film has been the thirty-second Superbowl spot. While repeating some scenes from that, this expanded on what was shown and combined finished effects with animatics and live-action footage. The footage established the premise that an international military task force has been setup to combat global threats. The base of operations seems to be a sandy desert somewhere with one of the early effects shots showing a secret circular hangar bay door opening for an advanced Harrier-like jet to land.
- Later on we see two lumps racing under the sand and disturbing a caravan of camels. The main thrust of the story in the film is that the COBRA organization have taken microscopic robot nanites, originally developed as a way to cure cancer, and have been able to reprogram them to do almost anything. A demonstration involves the launch of a missile containing some nanites that have been programmed to eat metal. The missile is fired from some sort of underwater vehicle in The Seine, it streaks across Paris and hits the Eiffel tower. The tower is eaten away, bits of the lower arches start falling off as people scatter, and the tower itself collapses.Destro (Christopher Eccleston) talks about the plan and is seen operating from COBRA’s own secret base which is a huge underwater facility under the Arctic ice.
- Much of the visual effects footage, albeit mostly incomplete, showed what looked like a climactic attack by GIJOE’s forces against this base - think “Thunderball” meets “Seaquest” with lots of sleek looking CG submersibles attacking similar vehicles and/or the giant metal spires that make up the various wings of the facility.Another big portion of the footage is devoted to the body armor worn by the good guys. The body suit essentially covers everything but their face (which is covered in retractable glass/plastic) and is said to enhance a person’s strength, speed and agility. We briefly glimpse the CG heads up display on the inside of each helmet as well.Cut to a truly bizarre scene in Paris where two people (Channing Tatum and Marlon Wayans I think) in the suits are running through the streets as European luxury cars with retractable guided missile launchers built into them fire rockets at the duo. The two guys jump, flip, dive through a train, get flung off the back of a truck that gets blown up, etc. Later on there’s a scene with The Baroness (Sienna Miller) on top of a a building’s massive glass ceiling as Tatum’s character lands on the far side. As he runs towards her, she sets off some device and the ceiling explodes upwards in a massive shower of glass that sends him tumbling.
- While we glimpse Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow in the footage a few times, there was no sign or even hint of Cobra Commander as far as I can recall.”
‘G.I. Joe‘ is scheduled to hit theaters on August 7,2009. For all of the movies in this post, you can go to the CTU Calendar to get the current list of international release dates.
CHANNING TATUM VIDEO OF THE WEEK: Official ‘Public Enemies’ Trailer
March 4, 2009
Today’s Video of the Week is the long-awaited trailer for Channing Tatum’s movie ‘Public Enemies‘ with Johnny Depp, Christian Bale, and Marion Cotillard.
The trailer screen capture above is our very first look at Channing Tatum as Pretty Boy Floyd. In the scene (which was filmed last May in an orchard outside of Madison, Wisconsin), we see Chan running away from Christian Bale (aka FBI agent Melvin Purvis) as he tries to avoid capture in what will be his first death scene in a film.
Since Channing filmed his ‘Public Enemies‘ scene right after ‘G.I. Joe‘ wrapped in the states and before they moved to their Prague-based set in the Czech Republic, I have to assume that Chan’s hair in this scene is a bit of movie magic. A short snippet of Chan’s scene with Bale can be found at about 1 minute and 24 seconds into the trailer.
The trailer (which can also be seen in high definition on the CTU Youtube channel) was definitely worth the wait, and the movie looks likes it’s going to be amazing! Enjoy!!!
In addition to a new poster and trailer, the movie also has a new official site, and don’t forget to check out a special preview of the film on ET tonight (Wednesday, March 4, 2009) at 6:30 PM Central.
‘Public Enemies‘ hits US theaters on July 1, 2009. Fans can CLICK HERE to get a current list of international release dates for the film.
If you have a favorite video that you would like me to consider, send a link to the video to votw@channingtatumunwrapped.com and tell me why you like it. I will post it and your explanation on the blog.

RUMOR OR REEL?: Trailer for Channing Tatum’s ‘Public Enemies’ Gets a Solid Release Date
February 26, 2009
On the heels of the 9 second micro-trailer we saw at the end of the Oscars telecast last Sunday, it looks like we may finally get the full ‘Public Enemies‘ trailer we’ve all been waiting for…
Thanks to the Italian movie site Screen Week we have learned that the highly-anticipated trailer for Channing Tatum, Johnny Depp, and Christian Bale’s historical drama ‘Public Enemies‘ may be released as early as next week.
Assuming my translator is correct, the site is reporting that the trailer will debut online on March 4th on Apple.com. In Italy, fans will be able to view the trailer exclusively on MSN that same day.
Although I’m sure we’ll be seeing it before other films in the future, the trailer will initially be attached to the new comic-book adaptation ‘Watchmen‘ when it releases in US theaters on March 6th.
It’s my understanding that the trailer release news was also confirmed by the Russian distributor of the film, so I’m thinking this has gone far beyond the rumor stage and has leaped it’s way into “reel” territory.
In other potential ‘Public Enemies‘ news…The word on the street via the UK’s Daily Mail is that the selection committee of the prestigious Cannes Film Festival is taking a trip to Los Angeles, California soon to see a rough cut of the movie to decide where it might fit at the May festival of all film festivals. Rumor has it that ‘Public Enemies‘ may be bestowed the honor of being the opening film or may be a special premiere during the annual film festival. I’ve heard that a decision will be made some time in April, so I’ll keep you posted.
So if the rumors are correct, be on the look out for the new ‘Public Enemies‘ trailer on Wednesday, March 4th, 2009, and as always, I will post it on CTU as soon as I can get my hands on it.
‘Public Enemies‘ hits US theaters on July 1, 2009 and Italian theaters on October 2, 2009. Fans can CLICK HERE to get a current list of international release dates for the film.
UPDATE: I have been told by someone that has seen the trailer that Channing’s character Pretty Boy Floyd does make an appearance!
IN THE PRESS: Channing Tatum and ‘Public Enemies’ Chosen as 2010 Oscar Contenders
February 25, 2009
As many of you know, the 2009 Oscar winners were just announced on Sunday, but weeks before those little accountant-stuffed envelopes were opened and the ‘Slumdog Millionaire’s hit the stage 8 times to accept every award you could think of, film sites were already predicting which movies may be award contenders in 2010.
I was happy to see that Channing Tatum’s drama ‘Public Enemies‘ was on the shortlist as a potential Oscar nominee in all of the articles I read about the 2010 predictions.
The experts feel that the movie could garner nominations for Best Picture, Best Director for Michael Mann, Best Actor for Johnny Depp and/or Christian Bale, and below you will find snippets of an article from the Times Online in the UK that picks our very own Channing Tatum as a possible contender for Best Supporting actor for his role as Pretty Boy Floyd…
Who’s tipped for Oscars in 2010?
Somewhere out there there’s a low-budget underdog story that may just sweep the board again - By Wendy Ide
Next year’s winners may be determined by a set of variables other than the usual factors of box-office and critical acclaim. The worse the financial downturn, the more likely the Academy is to reward feel-good, optimistic crowd-pleasers. This, and the fact that Iraq movies have trouble finding an audience, may rule out the usual Academy favourites Jim Sheridan and Paul Greengrass, for Brothers and Green Zone respectively. Stories of courage should do well, so watch out for Hilary Swank playing the female aviator Amelia Earhart in Mira Nair’s Amelia. But there’s a year to go and the race is wide open. And somewhere out there there’s a low-budget underdog story that may just sweep the board again…
Public Enemies (released July 3, 2009 in the UK)
Johnny Depp and Christian Bale star in Michael Mann’s 1930s gangster movie. Depp’s turn as violent gangster John Dillinger is a departure for an actor who has been increasingly cast in the likeable maverick role.
But the award goes to: Channing Tatum for Best Supporting Psychotic Pretty Boy…
If all of their predictions pan out, Chan will be in extremely good company, because they also chose the following films as 2010 potential nominees in many of the other categories:
- Rob Marshall’s ‘Nine’ with Daniel Day-Lewis, Nicole Kidman, Penélope Cruz, Marion Cotillard and Sophia Loren
- Peter Jackson’s ‘The Lovely Bones’
- Clint Eastwood’s ‘The Human Factor’ with Morgan Freeman
- Martin Scorsese’s ‘Shutter Island’ with Leonardo DiCaprio
- Will Colette’s ‘Chéri’ with Michelle Pfeiffer
- The Coen Brother’s ‘A Serious Man’
- Pedro Almódovar’s ‘Broken Embraces’ with Penélope Cruz
- Zack Snyder’s ‘Watchmen’
- Ang Lee and James Schamus’ ‘Taking Woodstock’ with Demetri Martin, Emile Hirsch, and Paul Dano
As melodramatic as it may sound, the road to the Oscars is not an easy one and is definitely paved in the blood, sweat, and tears of the producers, directors, actors, and below-the-liners that work extremely hard to make the films, so it would be amazing to see Channing and/or this film among the nominees and winners next year.
Let’s all keep our fingers crossed that the same talent that won Channing a Special Jury Prize at Sundance and a 2007 Film Independent Spirit Award nomination for his role as Antonio in ‘A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints‘ will also lead him to a future Oscar nod.
Fans can watch the Oscar contenders (both Channing Tatum and ‘Public Enemies‘) when the movie hits theaters on July 1st in the US and July 3rd in the UK. You can CLICK HERE to get a current list of international release dates on the CTU Calendar.
VIDEO OF THE WEEK: First Look at Channing Tatum’s ‘Public Enemies’ in Oscars Trailer
February 23, 2009
Although Madonna had a lengthy “4 Minutes to Save the World”, Channing Tatum’s upcoming historical drama ‘Public Enemies‘ only had 10 seconds or less to save the fans from dying of anticipation through what I’m calling a “micro-trailer” shown at the end of last night’s Oscar telecast. Whether they succeeded or not remains to be seen, but I can definitely say they left the fans wanting more.
Fans have been really chomping at the bit to see any kind of trailer (no matter how succinct it may be) from this film, so it’s safe to say that the footage shown last night was the most anticipated 9 seconds of film ever known to man. I was really excited to see it, because no one had been able to confirm if PE footage was going to be a part of the Oscars’ new movie montage, so it was cool to know that my educated guess panned out!!!
Today’s Video of the Week is a first look at the film that also stars Johnny Depp, Christian Bale, and Oscar-winning actress Marion Cotillard.
Although Channing is not featured in the “micro-trailer” (because you can only fit so much into 9 seconds), fans should still check out the video below, and I hope Chan will be in the longer trailer when ever it’s released. Enjoy!!!
In case you’re interested, in addition to ‘Public Enemies‘ , “micro-trailers” were also shown for the following films during the end credits of the 2009 Oscars: ‘Sherlock Holmes’, ‘Funny People’, ‘Taking of Pelham 123′, ‘Julie & Julia’, ‘The Soloist’, ‘Up’, ‘Fame’, ‘Terminator Salvation’, ‘500 Days of Summer’, ‘Amelia’, ‘Whatever Works’, ‘Inglorious Basterds’, ‘Night at the Museum 2′, ‘Monsters vs. Aliens’, ‘Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince’, ‘Angels & Demons’, ‘Old Dogs’, ‘Ice Age: The Dawn of Dinosaurs’, ‘The Boat that Rocked’, ‘An Education’, ‘State of Play’, ‘Imagine That’, and ‘G-Force’.
‘Public Enemies‘ will be released in US theaters on July 1, 2009. Fans can CLICK HERE to get the current list of international release dates for the film.

NEWS FLASH: New Test Screening Reviews for Channing Tatum’s ‘Public Enemies’
February 13, 2009
As I mentioned in my previous post, Channing Tatum’s historical drama, ‘Public Enemies,’ had another test screening on Thursday night. The screening was held at the Sherman Oaks Arclight in the Los Angeles, California area, and director Michael Mann was in attendance again (along with a reported packed house of around 400 - 600 screeners).
Reviewers are raving about the “superb” acting and casting and “top notch” cinematography, art direction, costumes, and score that transported them back to the 1930’s. Below you will find snippets from one of the reviews I found on Ain’t It Cool News. Enjoy!!!
“…They had one of those special screenings last night where they don’t tell you what the title of the movie is at the Sherman Oaks Arclight. When I first read the synopsis on my pass about a John Dillinger gangster flick I instantly knew what it was and thanked the gods for giving me this great chance. Michael Mann sat right in front of me as well, taking notes and actually gave me a thing of popcorn he didn’t want.
After what seemed like hours, they announced it was ’Public Enemies,’ the lights dimmed and the movie began. I am going to keep this ridiculously SPOILER-FREE.
When the movie started there weren’t any opening credits whatsoever. No title of the movie or any actors names. The first thing you see on the screen is a giant 1933 in bold white letters, and then some statements about the depression. The opening scene is a jail breakout led by yours truly Johnny Depp. You have to see this movie to believe how great it looks. The way it was shot was different than a lot of movies coming out now a days. The whole Michael Mann, handheld camera in your face is there and works like magic. The cast is phenomenal. Johnny Depp and Christian Bale are both on top of their game in this movie…Channing Tatum…is…in Christian Bale’s first scene where he is chasing down Tatum’s Pretty Boy Floyd. All the bank robbery scenes are filmed so well and the shootouts in the streets are so insane! The gunshots are so realistic and so ridiculously loud!
There is a scene close to the end of the film where Christian Bale’s character and the FBI try to ambush Johnny Depp and his mobster crew at their Wisconsin hideout in the woods, and let me tell you, it is ubelieveable! You are literally on the edge of your seat …Obviously I won’t tell you how the woods shootout ends, but I will say this, Stephen Graham who plays Baby Face Nelson is THE MAN!
Whether or not you know how John Dillinger’s story comes to an end, you will be in awe at the end of this movie!
Sorry I kept this extremely spoiler free, but honestly, you don’t wanna know anything about this movie before you treat your eyes to a gloirious treat. You just have to see it and love it. This is one of the greatest gangster flicks I have ever seen in a very long time. I highly reccommend this film and hope some of you can get a chance to see another screening of it soon.”
I didn’t think it was possible for ‘Public Enemies‘ to be any more highly-anticipated, but after reading the reviews and glowing responses from screening attendees, it’s clear that the film has managed to do just that.
Based on the New York Times Best Selling author Bryan Burrough’s true crime book, ‘Public Enemies‘ follows the FBI hunt for 1930’s gangster John Dillinger.
In addition to Channing Tatum, Johnny Depp, and Christian Bale, the Universal Studios film’s star-studded cast also includes Marion Cotillard, Branka Katic, Billy Crudup, Giovanni Ribisi, Emilie de Ravin, John Michael Bolger, Stephen Dorff, Christian Stolte, Stephen Graham, and Leelee Sobieski.
‘Public Enemies‘ will be released in US theaters on July 1, 2009. You can CLICK HERE to get a list of the international release dates for the film.
NEWS FLASH: Channing Tatum’s ‘Public Enemies’ Gets Official Rating & New Test Screening
February 12, 2009
Channing Tatum’s historical crime drama ‘Public Enemies‘ has officially been given a rating by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA).
The highly-anticipated film is going to be rated ‘R‘, because it has “gangster violence and some language”.
Based on the New York Times Best Selling author Bryan Burrough’s true crime book, ‘Public Enemies‘ follows the FBI hunt for 1930’s gangster John Dillinger.
The Universal Studios film is directed by Michael Mann and boasts a stunning cast that includes Channing Tatum, Johnny Depp, Marion Cotillard, Christian Bale, Branka Katic, Billy Crudup, Giovanni Ribisi, Emilie de Ravin, John Michael Bolger, Stephen Dorff, Christian Stolte and Leelee Sobieski.
Lending some credence to the recent trailer release rumors, a little birdy named Belinda (a CTU reader and Channing Tatum fan) just let me know about a new test screening of ‘Public Enemies‘ being held tonight in the Los Angeles, California area. Stay tuned to CTU, because I’ll post any feedback from the screening that I can find. Fans can CLICK HERE to learn more about the previous test screenings for this film.
Finally, based on a recent New York Times article, conspiracy theorists are speculating that the we may be able to see the first ‘Public Enemies‘ footage during the upcoming Oscar telecast on February 22nd.
To spice things up and combat declining ratings, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced an end to a long-standing ban on playing movie advertisements during their Oscar night. Producers of the awards show recently asked the studios and others to provide scenes from future films. Supposedly, the plan is for host Hugh Jackman to sign off the broadcast with never-before-seen 10-second clips of two dozen new movies that will run on a split screen with the end credits.
Some are thinking that ’Public Enemies‘ could be one of those films, but only time will tell. Looks like some of us may have more than just the red carpet fashions to look forward to on awards night.
‘Public Enemies‘ will be released in US theaters on July 1, 2009. You can CLICK HERE to get a list of the international release dates for the film.

New Promotional Photos from Channing Tatum’s ‘Public Enemies’
January 28, 2009
Although we’ve seen some of the new photos below in recent Empire Magazine and Entertainment Weekly articles that featured the film, Universal just released high quality versions of the promotional photos for Channing Tatum’s highly-anticipated historical drama ‘Public Enemies‘.
Set during the Depression-era’s great crime wave, ‘Public Enemies is the story of the government’s attempt to stop legendary criminals John Dillinger, Baby Face Nelson and Pretty Boy Floyd. This operation transformed the FBI into the first federal police force from the powerless agency it once was. In addition to Channing Tatum, the star-studded cast includes Johnny Depp, Christian Bale, Billy Crudup, Leelee Sobieski, Giovanni Ribisi, David Wenham, Stephen Graham, Emilie de Ravin, Marion Cotillard, and Stephen Dorff.
You can click on the images below to view and download the high quality promotional stills:
Here’s Universal’s plot outline for ‘Public Enemies‘ where Channing Tatum plays hardcore criminal Pretty Boy Floyd who is hunted down by Christian Bale’s character Melvin Purvis…
“In the action-thriller ‘Public Enemies‘, acclaimed filmmaker Michael Mann directs Johnny Depp, Christian Bale, Channing Tatum, and Academy Award® winner Marion Cotillard in the incredible and true story of legendary Depression-era bank robber John Dillinger (Depp), the charismatic bank robber whose lightning raids made him the number one target of J. Edgar Hoovers fledgling FBI and its top agent, Melvin Purvis (Bale), and a folk hero to much of the downtrodden public.
No one could stop Dillinger. No jail could hold him. His charm and audacious jailbreaks endeared him to almost everyone, from his girlfriend Billie Frechette (Cotillard) to an American public who had no sympathy for the banks that had plunged the country into the Depression. But while the adventures of Dillinger’s gang, later including the sociopathic Baby Face Nelson (Stephen Graham), thrilled many, Hoover (Billy Crudup) hit on the idea of exploiting the outlaw’s capture as a way to elevate his Bureau of Investigation into the national police force that became the FBI. He made Dillinger America’s first Public Enemy Number One.
Hoover sent in Purvis, the dashing “Clark Gable of the FBI”. However, Dillinger and his gang outwitted and outgunned Purvis’ men in wild chases and shootouts. Only after importing a crew of Western ex-lawmen (newly baptized as agents) who were real gunfighters and orchestrating epic betrayals from the infamous “Lady in Red” to the Chicago crime boss Frank Nittiwere Purvis and the FBI able to close in on Dillinger.”
‘Public Enemies‘ will release in US theaters on July 1, 2009 and we’re hoping to see a trailer for the film in the next few months. Fans can CLICK HERE to get a list of the international release dates for the film.
