CHANNING TATUM MOVIE BYTES: ‘Fighting’, ‘Dear John’, ‘Step Up 3-D’, ‘Guide’, and ‘G.I. Joe’

November 12, 2008

CHANNING TATUM MOVIE BYTES: 'Fighting', 'Dear John', 'Step Up 3-D', 'A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints', and 'G.I. Joe'

I have found a lot more news all over the internet about Channing Tatum’s films. Check out today’s Channing Tatum Movie Bytes to get the latest scoop. Enjoy!!!

FIGHTING

Channing Tatum in a Scene on the Set of 'Fighting' (High Quality - HQ)In ‘Fighting‘, Channing plays Sean Arthur, a young ticket scalper that is introduced to the world of underground street fighting. Although the date has shifted a few times, we have a new release date for the action drama, and I have a feeling that this one might stick. The film is now scheduled to release on April 24, 2009, which is just a couple of days before Chan’s 29th birthday.

Kevin Misher, Misher Films helmer and one of the movie’s executive producers, has told me that he’s extremely excited about the movie. I’m totally excited too, because both he and the NBC Universal team who is marketing ‘Fighting‘ have confirmed that Channing Tatum Unwrapped will be kept in the loop on any future news about this project, so stay tuned.

DEAR JOHN

Channing Tatum and the Nicholas Sparks Book 'Dear John'The cast continues to grow over on the set of Channing Tatum’s romantic drama ‘Dear John‘, Lasse Hallstrom’s adaptation of Nicholas Sparks’ best-selling novel.

Last month, CarolinaAutism.org announced that a 6 year old Carolina Autism client has been chosen to star in ‘Dear John‘. They do not give his name, but confirmed that he will be playing the part of Alan. They said that the director chose a child with autism to play the part in a daring statement about authenticity and the ability of people with autism to work and participate in the entertainment industry. A person by the name of Phil Blevins, who works for Carolina Autism, has been retained to consult to the production on matters related to autism spectrum disorders.

A few days ago, we also learned from the Hollywood Reporter that the production has added veteran actor Richard Jenkins (’The Visitor’, ‘Burn After Reading’, “Six Feet Under”) to their cast. Jenkins will play the father of the young soldier John Tyree (Channing Tatum) who meets the girl of his dreams, Savannah Lynn Curtis (Amanda Seyfried), while on military leave.

Finally, Scott Porter (”Friday Night Lights”), who is rumored to be playing the character of Randy, recently mentioned in a TV Guide interview that Chris Cooper (’The Kingdom’, ‘Breach’) has also signed on to the cast, but did not mention what specific role he is playing.

Dear John‘, the epic love story that Chan is filming in South Carolina threw December, will be released in theaters some time around October 2009.

STEP UP 3-D

'Step Up 3-D' PosterAt the 2008 American Film Market (AFM), ComingSoon.net got their hands on some initial poster artwork for the highly anticipated ‘Step Up 3-D‘. AFM is where over 8,000 industry leaders converge in Santa Monica for eight days of deal-making, screenings, seminars, red carpet premieres, networking and parties. Fans can click on the image on the left to view the new poster in the Channing Tatum Unwrapped Photo Gallery.

Although (in my humble opinion) I don’t think that Channing will be making an appearance in the third chapter of the extremely popular ‘Step Up’ franchise, based on an announcement producer Adam Shankman made on the show ‘So You Think You Can Dance’, we do know for sure that ‘Step Up 2: The Streets‘ director Jon M. Chu and break out star Adam Sevani will be returning in ‘Step Up 3-D‘. I can’t wait to see the film that is set to hit theaters some time in 2009 or 2010.

A GUIDE TO RECOGNIZING YOUR SAINTS

Fans will be able to purchase the new A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints (Steelbook) edition of the film on February 3, 2009, but you can get more details and pre-order on Amazon today.

G.I. JOE: RISE OF COBRA

Promotional Photo of Channing Tatum as Duke in 'G.I. Joe' (Cropped)I’m not sure if this one’s real or rumor, but I hear that a teaser/trailer will be released for Channing Tatum’s highly-anticipated, live action blockbuster ‘G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra‘ in the next few weeks.

The treaser (not quite a trailer, but longer than a teaser) may have a debut during the previews of Keanu Reeves’ science fiction remake ‘The Day the Earth Stood Still‘ when it opens in US theaters on December 12, 2008, so fans should be on the look out for it. ‘G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra‘ is scheduled to hit US theaters on August 7, 2009.

NEWS FLASH: Watch Channing Tatum’s ‘A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints’ at Jakarta International Film Festival

December 8, 2007

Channing Tatum’s indie film ‘A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints‘ will be shown at the 9th Jakarta International Film Festival (JiFFest) which runs from December 7 - 16, 2007.

JiFFest is one of South East Asia’s most exciting film festivals. In the past 3 years, it has grown and developed into a thriving festival, with a record audience of 63,000 last year. This year, JiFFest will show more than 200 films from over 30 countries in the following movie theaters: Djakarta XXI, Kineforum, Goethe Institut, Erasmus Huis, and the new Blitz Megaplex in Grand Indonesia.

Most JiFFest films are temporarily imported into the country only for the festival. After the screenings end, the films will be shipped out of the country, and you may never see them again. So this could be your only chance to see Chan in this film!

If you haven’t had the opportunity to see Channing’s critically-acclaimed performance as Antonio in ‘Saints‘, you can read the review below from Kabar Magazine to see what you’re missing:

“A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints” is the directorial debut of writer, punk-rock musician, former Calvin Klein underwear model and New York hipster, Dito Montiel. The film is based upon his memoir of the same title, about growing up in a tough New York neighbourhood and the friends he left behind. A coming-of-age drama about a boy growing up in Astoria, New York, during the 1980s. Think “Kids” meets “The Basketball Diaries”.

What makes the life of one Dito Montiel an interesting story to put on the silver screen? Well, for starters how the story was filmed is magnificently raw, dirty, no-hold-bars, anything goes, the kind of film-making and storytelling that only a handful of directors have achieved, Spike Lee being one of them.

The film is based around two narratives, the first focusing on the young Dito making his way through the poverty stricken Astoria district of New York in the 1980s, while the second has an older Dito (played by the under-appreciated Robert Downey Jr.) returning to his old stomping ground years later, coming to terms with his past and what he has left behind. This was the real thing, an evocation of life in the run-down Astoria district, told with matter-of-fact naiveté; of open-mic nights, of the transvestite Marilyns and Mansfields doing their business across the street, of trying to get laid with the girl from around the corner, of watching your best friend Antonio kill a boy with a single blow of a baseball bat. And of encountering people who, without seeming to at the time, looked after you and kept you safe from harm, your guardian saints, even while their own lives crashed and burned.

“A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints” won a special award for its ensemble of actors at last year’s Sundance festival, and it’s easy to see why. Shia LaBeouf gives the performance of his young career as young Dito, a sensitive, damaged kid growing up on an old neighbourhood located in Queens, New York. Chazz Palminteri and Dianne Wiest are terrific as Dito’s parents, and Channing Tatum all but steals the movie as Antonio, his violent and doomed best friend…

A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints‘ is showing at JiFFest 2007 at the following dates, times, and location:

Dates and Times:
December 10, 2007 - 19:00
December 11, 2007 - 21:30

Location:
Djakarta Theatre XXI Studio 1

NEWS FLASH: Woody Harrelson Joins Cast of Channing Tatum’s ‘Pinkville’

October 25, 2007

People seem to love to work with Channing Tatum so much they keep following him from movie to movie. Don’t believe me? Well today’s new casting announcement for Chan’s upcoming film ‘Pinkville’ solidified that fact.

Channing Tatum, Woody Harrelson, Bruce Willis and Oliver Stone of ‘Pinkville’

HollywoodReporter.com is saying that Channing’s ‘Battle in Seattle’ co-star Woody Harrelson has now joined the cast of ‘Pinkville’, which already includes A-List actor Bruce Willis and three-time, Oscar-winning director Oliver Stone.

Although the article below says they will start filming early next year, Chan told me that he will start working on the project towards the end of November and will be filming in Thailand for 3 months.

You can read the entire Hollywood Reporter article below to learn more about Woody Harrelson’s new role in Channing’s ‘Pinkville’.

Cast in Stone: Harrelson to ‘Pinkville’
By Carly Mayberry - Oct 25, 2007

Woody Harrelson is reteaming with Oliver Stone in the director’s Vietnam War drama “Pinkville” for United Artists.

Harrelson joins Bruce Willis and Channing Tatum, who already have been cast in the mystery drama based on the infamous 1968 My Lai Massacre, in which upward of 500 people — mostly women, children and the elderly — were killed by U.S. soldiers. The massacre ended up being a turning point in the war.

Harrelson will play Col. Henderson, the conflicted officer in charge of the task force that committed the massacre.

Mikko Alanne wrote the script. Production is set to begin next year, with MGM distributing.

Willis will portray William R. Peers, the real-life Army general who investigated the incident. Tatum will play Hugh Thompson Jr., an Army helicopter pilot who aided the villagers and later testified against the soldiers.

Michael Pena, who appeared in Stone’s “World Trade Center” and plays an Army Ranger in Afghanistan in Robert Redford’s “Lions for Lambs,” also has been cast.

Stone is no stranger to films set against the backdrop of Vietnam. “Pinkville” — the title refers to a military description on the My Lai region — accompanies the director’s “Platoon,” “Born on the Fourth of July” and “Heaven and Earth,” all of which centered on the war.

Harrelson starred in Stone’s “Natural Born Killers.” His more recent credits include “A Prairie Home Companion” and “The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio.” He is repped by CAA, Tracy Harshman and attorney Steve Burkow.

What are some other examples of this phenomena of people following Chan from movie to movie?

And those examples are just off to the top of my head. I’m sure there are more. After spending the day with him and personally seeing how much the ‘Fighting’ cast and crew love working with Chan, I am sure we’ll see plenty more of this phenomena for years to come.

BLAST FROM THE PAST: MoviePictureFilm.com Interview with Channing Tatum and Chazz Palminteri for ‘A Guide To Recognizing Your Saints’

August 21, 2007

Fabulous Channing Tatum Fan, CTU Reader, and avid CBox chatter Naz found a couple of great interviews posted by MoviePictureFilm.com on February 10, 2006 that I had not seen before with Channing Tatum and his ‘A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints’ mentor/co-star/on-screen surrogate father Chazz Palminteri.

Chan’s article even has a picture that I had not seen before, so this was a great find by Naz and I appreciate her taking the time to send me the link. Below you will see Channing’s entire interview and the parts of Chazz’s interview where he talks about his experiences with the talented actor. Enjoy!

Interview: Channing Tatum (A Guide To Recognizing Your Saints)

It’s no secret Channing Tatum is hot and talented. He’s about to explode over here in the U.S. and he shows off his impressive skills and assets in “A Guide To Recognizing Your Saints”

MPF sat down with Channing about a week ago to talk about his new film. Easy on the eyes and a talented up and comer, Channing chatted about playing the role of Antonio (a real life guy).

MPF: At the end of this whole experience, what did you learn about playing this character?

Channing: I learned that everyone doesn’t have to like the character. Chazz told me that. They just have to understand it. That was the one piece of advice that I’ve taken from this experience with this movie. It was better than any acting class. I think that’s why people get caught up in picking roles. People want to be the hero. It’s so much more important to do roles that are not that because it’s more real. People aren’t walking around thinking that they have to be this great guy, just be themselves and try to let other people know it’s okay to be who they are. As long as people will understand why Antonio did the things he did and was the way he was.

MPF: How did you get along with Chazz Palminteri?

Channing: He was, by far, my mentor in the whole thing. He’s been very fatherly from day one, from the first scene to the last scene.

MPF: What was it like filming in Astoria? Did you run into the real people from Dito Montiel’s childhood?

Channing: It was Nerve racking. We filmed at Antonio’s house. His little brother and sister were always coming out and running around and I’m sitting there and thinking, “My God. They can’t see me. I gotta get out of here.” The first thing everyone asked was, “Who’s playing Antonio?” They didn’t want to know who’s playing Dito. Antonio was like a superhero in this neighborhood. It was very humbling. I would tell everybody that I’m not trying to be Antonio. I can’t try to be, if I’ve never met him. I think I’ve done him a good service. Anyone else would have just fallen on their face trying to duplicate him. All I was trying to do was to recreate the relationship and duplicate the love.

MPF: Can you talk about the upcoming Kimberly Pierce film? Isn’t it about Iraq?

Channing: It’s going really well. We’re right in the middle of it. It’s intense like “A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints” is, but in totally different way. It’s about two best friends who come back from the war. It’s not really about the war, in a way. Yeah, it’s a war film, but it’s really about these people and their relationships and their love for each other. Just like in “A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints”, it’s about change, the war has changed them. They don’t know what’s going to happen. Certain things kind of put them through a trial. The two kids growing up together end up going in different directions and it’s painful. It’s not anti-war. If anything, it’s just more about the soldiers and it’s like an ode to them.

MPF: Why did you choose this role?

Channing: When I read it, I was like crying my eyes out in the tub. But basically, my best friend growing up was Antonio. So, as I’m reading it, I’m like, “Oh my God, this is Matt”. (His best friend)
I was more like Dito in my life. I walked away from a few people like that and I feel like I just knew him. I would throw up if I saw anyone else mess with him because everyone was afraid of him, but we were the softest people who were just misunderstood.

Final Impression of Channing Tatum:

Did we mention he was hot? Yes, but besides that obvious fact, Channing Tatum is a talented and warm guy. I mean, how much hotter can you get then crying in the tub? Anyway, he’s a great newcomer and I expect to see a ton of great things from him in the future.

Interview: Chazz Palminteri (A Guide To Recognizing Your Saints)

MPF: Did you relate to the character?

Chazz: When we did the scene with the seizure, all of a sudden Channing broke something’s, glass was all over the place and then when they said “Cut!”, some of the people got upset with him because they thought he was out of control which he wasn’t. It’s just because Dito told him to do whatever he wanted, so a few people from the set yelled at him and I didn’t like that, so stood up and I said, “Don’t yell at the kid.” I did it as me, but, subconsciously I knew what I was doing. It kind of like bonded our soul together. I said, “If you want to yell at somebody, yell at me.”

MPF: Talk about working with a young actor like Channing Tatum.

Chazz: I knew that Channing was going to bust out any second. I said to him, “Listen to me very carefully. You’re going to bust out very big really soon. Don’t f**k it up. Stay focused on the work. Stay strong.” He listened to everything. He’s a great actor and he has great instincts. We were doing our scenes together and I told him some things to do and he did it right away. Then in the next take he did it again and I didn’t have to tell him twice. He was like a sponge.

Thanks again Naz for finding these great articles!

Channing Tatum Pictures of the Week: Fabulous Fan Photo Submission

August 4, 2007

Each week Channing Tatum Unwrapped will post one or more of our favorite pictures of the uber hot Channing Tatum.

Today’s Picture of the Week was submitted by Fabulous Channing Tatum Fan Gina from the Philippines. It’s a picture of Channing Tatum at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival promoting his movie ‘A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints’ in the Levi’s Dry Goods store in Park City on day 5 of the festival.

Here is why Gina chose this photo as the Picture of the Week:

LOL My first reason is that I want that jacket he is signing!!!!!! Second, I loved how he stared back at the camera!! That’s a really fierce model look!!! I so love my Channing!

Thank you, Gina, for submitting this photo! I too like how Channing seems to be showing us a version of the “Blue Steel” model look in this photo. So SEXY!!!

If you have a favorite picture from this blog, our photo gallery, a picture you have made or a picture that you have found on the net that you would like us to consider, send the picture or a link to the picture to potw@channingtatumunwrapped.com and tell us why you like it. We will post it and your explanation on the blog. If you like or don’t like today’s picture (for some completely insane reason), let us know that too. :-)

NEWS FLASH: Channing Tatum to Reunite with AGTRYS Director Dito Montiel in New Fight Film

August 3, 2007

As I have said before, Channing is going to be really busy for the rest of this year with all of the new projects and movie releases he has on his plate.

Obviously, hard work is not a problem for Channing, because he just added yet another new movie to his lengthy upcoming project list and this one is with a very familiar face from his recent movie past.

Variety is now saying that Channing will be reuniting with Dito Montiel, the director from his award-winning movie ‘A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints’, for a new film about underground street fighting for Rogue Pictures.

Here’s how RopesofSilicon.com describes Channing’s character in the film: “…Sean Arthur, a young man who scrapes up a living scalping tickets in NYC. With family tragedy in his past and his father keeping him at a distance, this outsider has little to motivate him. A chance encounter with a veteran street-fighting coach leads to a whole new career for Sean. The ensuing bouts get tough, especially with the criminal element horning in, so Sean gets tougher. He will fight to win, not only the prize money but also the unexpected new relationships that are strengthening him.”

Hmmm…I wonder if it’s anything like Brad Pitt’s ‘Fight Club’ ? I don’t recall much about ‘Fight Club’, but I do remember that Brad looked pretty darn good in that movie, and I’m willing to bet almost anything that Channing will look even better. Looks like we are not going to get away from those Brad comparisons anytime soon.

Since Channing is “really good a physical things”, I doubt he would use a body double. And all I can say is, I really hope they try to keep the fighting away from his gorgeous face. I’ve kind of grown attached to it in it’s current state. Let’s just hope they’re really careful.

Anyway, here’s the Variety.com article that talks about Channing’s new project:

‘Saints’ Team Reunite for Fight Film
Tatum, Montiel to Work on Rogue Feature
By DIANE GARRETT

Channing Tatum and Dito Montiel, star and director, respectively, of “A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints,” will reteam on a feature about underground street fighting for Rogue.

Kevin Misher will produce the as-yet-untitled film through his Misher Films.

Tatum will play a young man scraping a living scalping tickets in Gotham who becomes involved in the underground sport after a chance encounter with a street-fighting coach.

Montiel has written the latest draft of the screenplay, with shooting skedded to begin in Gotham in September.

Summit Entertainment has a rival street-fighting pic lensing this summer. “Get Some” stars Sean Faris as a rebellious teen coerced into an underground fight club. Movie is the first Summit greenlit since it revamped earlier this year (Daily Variety, May 24).
