As we’ve seen in the ‘Twilight’ franchise, there is no guarantee, for a multitude of reasons, that each film in the series will have the same director (or even the same actors), but the stars seemed to have aligned for ‘G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra‘ director Stephen Sommers…

TheWrap is exclusively reporting that Sommers (‘The Mummy’, ‘Van Helsing’, ‘Tarzan’) will return to direct Paramount’s sequel to Chan’s $300-plus million grossing action film.

Back in April, MTV News caught up with Lorenzo di Bonaventura, the executive producer for both ‘G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra‘ and ‘G.I. Joe 2‘. Although Bonaventura was tight-lipped on details, he did confirm that they were working on the script with writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (“Zombieland”). An insider told TheWrap that “the studio is happy with the draft they turned in”.

He also mentioned that Paramount is very excited about getting the movie going, and they’ll possibly begin filming in the Spring of 2011. They’re hoping for a Summer 2012 release.
